to ruthless royal guards. Peter also begins to learn the truth about his dark
past and who he really is. Eventually, he discovers that he has a much bigger

with the help of the oppressed people and the power of his magic eye.
Character Analysis
· Peter Nimble: The protagonist is an orphan who was blind from birth. Since childhood, he lived a hard life on the streets and grew up to be a thief. Although his life is full of suffering, he has a good heart. As the story progresses, he undergoes significant character development-from a street thief to a hero.
·
Sir Tode: Peter's
faithful companion and companion in his adventures. He was once a proud knight,
but was cursed to become a strange creature-half cat and half horse. Although
his appearance is not as dashing as before, Sir Tode still has the spirit of
chivalry burning in his heart.
· Professor Cake: A mysterious old man who first introduced Peter to a world of wonders. It was he who sent Peter on a mission to save a lost kingdom. He appears stern but actually cares and his movements are unpredictable.
· Princess Peg: A girl Peter's age who is the princess of a lost kingdom—the Hazelport Kingdom. As the rightful heir to the throne, she demonstrates incredible strength and courage by leading the King's captive children. She is determined to reclaim the throne that is rightfully hers.
· King Incarnadine: The great enemy of the story. He usurped the throne by killing the previous king and queen and taking the children as captive. His leadership was full of cruelty and injustice. Anyone who dares to go against his orders will face his guards-a group of terrifying great apes.
Theme
and Symbols
·
The Search for Self: Peter is an
orphaned and blind boy, who since childhood has had to survive on his own.
Throughout the novel, he experiences a physical and emotional journey to
discover who he really is and his place in the world. This journey reflects the
search for identity and purpose in life.
·
Courage and Fortitude: Despite being
blind, Peter never lets his limitations stand in his way. He faced great
challenges with incredible courage. This theme teaches that true strength comes
from within, not from physical conditions.
·
The Fight between Good and Evil: The main
conflict in the story is between Peter (and his allies) against the evil king
who wants to control the kingdom. This theme is classic in the fantasy genre,
but it is presented in a unique way through the characters and the world Auxier
builds.
·
The Magical Eye: This is the
most striking symbol in the novel. These eyes represent more than just physical
sight-they symbolize insight and the ability to “see” hidden truths or
realities. Each pair of eyes carries a different power and helps Peter know the
world (and himself) in a new way.
· Cage or Confinement: Throughout
the story, many characters are literally or metaphorically “caged” by evil
forces, fear, or their past. This symbolizes an inner limitation or prison that
needs to be overcome to achieve true freedom
·
Keys and Padlocks: Keys often
appear as symbols of choice, hope, and possibility. Peter is a master thief-he
knows how to open locks literally, but also symbolically open the way to the
future and free the kingdom from evil influences.
Analysis of
Writing Style
Jonathan Auxier's writing style in Peter Nimble and His
Fantastic Eyes is classic and imaginative, typical of adventure tales. He
uses third-person point of view as a narrator who often addresses the reader
directly, creating an interactive and intimate feel as if he is listening to a
story from a storyteller. The language is rich and layered with meaning,
providing a blend of light humour, subtle irony, and philosophical reflection.
Auxier is also adept at creating a colourful fantasy world with symbolic
elements such as magic eyes, crows, and keys.
Personal
Reflection
I first read Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes when I was
in 6th grade, then reread it when I was in high school. I enjoyed reading this
novel more in high school because in some parts the writing style is a bit
difficult for elementary school children to understand. This novel not only
offers exciting adventures and a unique fantasy world, but also invites me to
explore the meaning of courage and hope. I admire Peter's character who
continues to fight despite his many limitations. Jonathan Auxier's
storytelling-like writing style made me feel completely immersed in the story,
as if I was exploring the world with Peter. I highly recommend this book to
anyone who enjoys fantasy stories full of imagination and touching moral
messages.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Peter
Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes is a fantasy novel that not only presents a thrilling adventure,
but also carries a strong moral message about self-discovery, courage, and
inner strength. With a playful storytelling style, Jonathan Auxier manages to
create a world that is both enthralling and meaningful. The unique characters
and surprising plot make this novel a fun and thought-provoking read. The
storytelling writing style and symbolism make this book suitable for both
school and personal reading. For fans of works like Harry Potter or The
Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes will be a
satisfying addition to their reading list.
